On one of the days this week, we were greeted with sunshine. It felt like it had been a while since the sun had come out to play. Most of our days have been filled with gumboots, and extra sweaters. The warmth of the sun made my toes wiggle in anticipation of flip-flop weather. (I did consider donning a pair for the day, but thought that February was a tad too early, even for a flip-flop devotee like me).
The light of the sun seemed to brighten everything in the house, even the girls’ moods. They played happily next to each other, sharing small toys and admiring the coiffes of each other’s ponies.
“Let’s lull Mom into a false sense of security, and then bring out the big guns later?”
Even I felt less like squabbling. Who cares if Pyjama Lucy is wearing bed-head hair all day? And if the ponies stay scattered across the living room rug well after playtime has ended – is that really the end of the world? I’ll just have a cup of tea and let the light remind me of spring and going outside and yards that aren’t so soggy that your shoes leave prints behind you.
And like all good things, eventually my “International Delights” moment faded off into the distance as the sun – my friend, my happy little visitor – suddenly grew an attitude.
“Hey Tara, do you remember this side table over here? When’s the last time you dusted it?”
“Oh Ta-raaaa…. why is the television covered in handprints and smears of – what IS this?”
“Yo, Tara! Are you ever going to fill in these huge gashes in your wall from errant race cars and plastic shopping carts? They look terrible.”
Sun – you miserable little jerk. Why must you point out the Honey-Do List I’ve so successfully ignored all winter?
I forgot that with spring, comes spring cleaning: her wicked stepsister.
So I started a project. Hubby called me brave. I called myself foolish.
It looked like this:
And when it’s done, I’ll post pictures. Until then, I’ll leave you to wonder how the sun can make people do foolish things. Like empty their pantry onto their kitchen table in a fit of organizational craziness.
There’s no going back now.

Thanks for the reminder that Spring is around the corner. Daylight savings is just two weeks away and the Spring equinox is less than four weeks away. Better get busy cleaning windows, raking the yard and getting the gardens ready for the smells of spring blossoms and fresh cut grass. Can hardly wait for afternoon baseball games, camping trips and warm summer evenings.
