We used a water-based melamine paint on the handrail – it’s held up really well (mainly because it’s a heavy duty paint). I’m sure that stain would do well, too. We went with a solid paint because our handrails were already white. Nothing to stain there.

Gorgeous. You know I love this…so airy but still so cozy and the two tone bannister is fabulous.

I am SO glad that we got the two tone staircase. I wanted to do it in the last place, but didn’t ever get the gumption to try it.

I can’t wait to have you here, too! Granted, we may not be totally unpacked by the time you come (even if it’s months away). This moving business is a crazy amount of work.

That being said, it’s amazing what a coat of paint will do. You used to be an avid painter, if I remember correctly…

I love the banister! I tested out a section of mine using java stain, but found it too harsh … Would you mind sharing your gray banister color? I think that would look great On my stairs! It’s so pretty!

I love the dark handrails. We have white rails and it show all the dirt from the kids so quickly. Dark is good with kids 🙂

I agree – white handrails are a teensy bit unforgiving. The grey shows some grease from handprints, but it washes up really easily. We used a very durable melamine-based paint (but still a latex – strangely enough) – and it cleans up beautifully.

Thank you so much! I was thrilled with how the dark handrail turned out. I kind of wish we had done it in our old house too!

Love this! My condo is painted beige very similarly to your house and I am trying to make the transition to greys/blacks. Thank you for the inspiration!

I think that the greys/blacks/whites completely changed the feel of our house. While beige is nice and warm, I feel like the cooler colours are so much more contemporary… and you’re able to decorate with whatever colour you desire!

The pop of color on the handrails really gives definition to the space. Great job! Thanks for sharing on Snickerdoodle Sunday!
