So, packaging can be a problem. We all know that.
And when I’m choosing “convenience foods”- a coffee, a clamshell of pre-washed lettuce – I cringe a little bit. Gah. This is just going to go right into the recycling bin after I use my lazy-lady products. The guilt!
I feel like David Suzuki is going to pop out from behind a corner and yell, “FOR SHAME!”
And yes, thank you Fake-David, for keeping me humble and consistently ashamed of how I grocery shop, but right now, I’m saving those containers….
… and I’m going to start my seeds in them.
The plastic clamshells act as little hothouses. Close the lid and put them in a warm spot, and the seeds will be cozy until they’re ready to be moved to pots.
The coffee cups, I know, are less traditional. But, I’ll cut them down to size and plant my cukes and zukes in them. The cups are easily – gently – torn away from the dirt and roots when transplanting time comes, and are lined, so that the damp soil won’t wick through the paper.
That’s my plan. And so I’ll be hollering, “Don’t recycle that!” at my hubby and kids for the next few weeks. I’m working on a little hoard of clamshells and coffee cups tucked away in the garage.
Spring will be here before you know it! Start collecting your “garbage-pots” from your blue bins!

I love the idea of using those as seed starters! I usually have a couple paper cups on my desk from the drink machine. That’s a really creative way to give them a second purpose before they get recycled!

Thank you, Sam! I like that they get a second life too. Anything to keep stuff out of the garbage!
