If you’ve read some of my past posts, you’ll know that I have every intention of having a successful (or somewhat successful) vegetable garden this year. After my sheer ignorance lead to the rotting of all of our first seeds, I decided to get serious. I was going to try again, and this time, I was going to set up a miniature nursery inside our house.
It was go time.
Lila took her role as “seed planter” very seriously. I hyper-managed the whole project (as is my style) and insisted, “Only one seed at a time, girls!”
Lila nodded and very carefully plucked each seed from her small pile.
Then this kid came along. Lucy decided to use creative license when it came to gardening. I was prepping her little dirt container when suddenly, I heard a “whoosh” of seeds and a quiet, “I’m sowwy, Mommy! I’m sowwy!”
That looks about right. This is how lettuce germinates, right? With 300 of their closest friends?
Serenity now!
I’ve got some thinning to do.
One more return + a very worried face from the sales clerk in the Electrical department + one trip to a new hardware store to buy completely different lights + a small conversation convincing Hubby that I won’t burn the house down = Our Own Little Greenhouse!
Look at those proud little cucumber sproutlings! They’re so happy to be basking in our non-electrocuting, smoke-free artificial light. I can’t wait to watch them grow bigger and bigger until they can go live outside, where Big Boy Cucumbers go.
We did it! We have (sort-of) green thumbs! And more lettuce than anyone could possibly need…
Follow along!

This would be me if I tried to start plants inside. I feel your pain, and I intend to add a fire extinguisher to my list of gardening supplies should I get around to starting one. 😉

That’s a good idea, Kayla. I should do that as well! (Though so far, so good!)
